Voting Webquest: “The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.” – Lyndon B. Johnson (36th U.S. President)
If you are completing this assignment, it's likely that you are eligible or almost eligible to vote. This webquest will provide you with information about voting in Washington as a young adult with a visual impairment. You may want to create a MS Word document in order to write down contact information and a "to do" list for yourself.
1. Before registering to vote, you will need to obtain astate identification card. As you get older, you will frequently be asked for an identification card so it would be a good idea to apply for it before leaving high school. Visit this website for more information.
3. Before voting, you will likely want to access the voter's pamphlet so that you can educate yourself about what is on the ballot. You can access audio, plain text, and MS Word versions of the pamphlet at this website. You can also request a braille or large print copy of the pamphlet by calling the voter hotline at 800-448-4881 or e-mailing [email protected] .
5. Not every individual with a visual impairment has a positive experience when voting. Read more about how the Help America Vote Act sought to help. A case in San Francisco, highlights issues that some individuals with visual impairments continue to encounter.
I hope that you have a positive experience voting each and every time. If not, I encourage you to contact your Secretary of State voting hotline and to advocate for yourself.
